KENYA • YARA ESTATE
This year’s harvest from Yara brings an unbelievably complex flavour profile to the cup. It builds up from a buttery and thick base, full of the density of a pound cake and the opulence of thick cream. The acidity is reminiscent of tropical fruit: think jackfruit, papaya, and guava. It all is rounded out with the bright sweetness of cooked pineapple and a layering of the vibrant florals of hibiscus and violet.
Yara is one of the oldest coffee estates in Kenya. It is tucked into the Eastern slopes of the Aberdare Mountains and originally started as a cattle farm under British colonial rule in 1902. Following Kenyan independence, the local indigenous community began growing coffee. Today, it is run by the Gatatha Farmer Company, who harvest both incredible coffee and tea.
