After high school, I left Saskatchewan for Montreal. While I have suffered with depression my whole life, being that far from home was one of my lowest-lows and I found great reprieve in the library stacks. Thanks to a year-long modernism course at Uni, I ended up working through Ezra Pound's Cantos and found solace in a line of his poetry: "a nice quiet paradise over the shambles".
These days, I am not the biggest Pound fan (mostly given his entanglement in Italian fascism) but that line became a personal mantra and the inspiration for the name Quietly Coffee. Everything can fall apart, but we might still find bliss in simple things like a cup of coffee. The industry continues to be hugely imbalanced and destructive. And yet, there are producers who harvest the most perfect beauty. Trying to run a business is never easy but it has become my own nice, quiet paradise.
