BIRTHDAY CAKE
THE QUIETLY BIRTHDAY PARTY:
It was late Spring 2019 that we first fired up the Probat and roasted our very first batches! Lots has changed since then with a new roaster and bigger space but some things stay the same: we celebrate the amazing work of our producer partners. This year we are celebrating our anniversary with three coffees that brings all the nostalgic glee of a birthday. Think too much cake, best friends, party bags, crowded swimming pools and dance parties.
ORIGIN:
The La Indonesia farm has been in the Torres family for over 40 years. At just over 2 hectares, Frank dedicates most of the land to coffee and plantains. He started his coffee career by working for Starbucks' specialty coffee program before becoming a green buyer for several importers. Such experience informs his innovative approach to processing and explains why he grows so many unique lots. He is also very conscious of environmental impacts and focuses heavily on soil conservation and biodiversity at farm level.
Every single year of Quietly, we have brought in Frank’s wonderful coffee. There is no shortage of highlights, but from this year's harvest we are bringing back two fan favourites: a Caturra and a Pink Bourbon lot! While the varietals themselves lean towards bright party notes, Frank’s ‘'reposado' sealed tank processing truly amplifies his distinctively tropical profiles. For the process, fresh cherries soak in water for 24 hours before milling.
FLAVOUR:
Both of these lots are perfect for Birthday Cake given their wide swath of party-friendly flavours. The caturra veers toward chocolate cake with an array of really juicy pomegranate and grenadine notes. It is rich and creamy with a nice round strawberry finish. The Pink Bourbon is all lime sofa and tropical mango with a nice malic acidity and a finish the mixes the brightness of rhubarb with some deep cooked sugar flavours. Both are complex and delightful and a perfect way to celebrate seven years of roasting coffees that I truly love and want to drink all day, everyday!
